Stop Motion Animation Workshops

Stop Motion Animation is captured one picture at a time, with tiny changes each time so so when it’s played back rapidly it looks like objects or pictures are moving. You’ll probably already be familiar with stop motion through famous films like Wallace and Gromit and The Nightmare Before Christmas.

Stop Motion Animation Workshops are a brilliant way to flex your imagination, as participants can create entire worlds for their film using paper, modelling clay, lego, or found objects. A hands-on experience for everyone, our Animation Workshops are versatile, fun, and endlessly creative.

What packages do we offer?

Taster Workshops

Participants will try their hand at a range of different animation techniques, moving around multiple stations to complete tasks. Perfect as an introduction to different styles and to get the most hands-on experience with a large group.

Full Day Workshops

Participants will work in small groups to create their own film in one stop motion animation style (such as paper, clay, or lego). Brilliant for exploring a learning topic as all the films can be screened at the end of the day.

Holiday Workshops

Longer and full-week sessions during School Holidays allow time for creating longer or more ambitious films. Perfect for combining with Scriptwriting and Craft sessions to create the story and visual assets from scratch.

What happens in one of our stop motion animation workshops?

Young people have a choice of using different materials to create models to tell an animated story. They will be using the industry’s top animation software and filmmaking kit with the support of animators. After an introduction to the kit, the participants will work in small groups to create their scene or film (depending on the length of the workshop).

At the end of the day, the film(s) will receive their final edit so the session ends with a screening of everyone’s work. The music will be added after the session and the final film will be shared after that.

What key skills do the students learn?

Animation teaches a range of creative, digital and soft skills.

A stop motion animation project teaches communication, team work and problem-solving. It encourages groups to work together to find creative solutions with the set perameters of the project.

It helps with literacy, as it encourages the participants to look at how to tell stories and create characters.

It also teaches valuable digital and IT skills, including camera technique and software skills.

How can stop motion animation link with the National Curriculum?

Animation is an extremely flexible storytelling medium that lends itself to integration with almost every subject.

Create narratives from History for the classroom, animate oral histories as a PSHE module, or work with your students to make short learning and revision resources in subjects such as Geography or Sciences.

The technical skills of animation also have close links with Art and Design, ICT, and English.
